Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders
Melanie McCoy of Scotland, Landon Gatliff of Clinton and Kassidy Clark of Marshall were among 47 high school students who toured Washington, D.C., in June as part of the 2024 Electric Cooperatives Youth Tour.
Participants in the Arkansas Youth Tour were selected through an essay contest organized by their local cooperatives. Sponsored by Petit Jean Electric and 16 other electric cooperatives across Arkansas, the tour allows students to visit historical sites, experience government firsthand, and develop leadership skills.
Landon reflected on his participation: “I had an amazing experience thanks to the sponsorship of Petit Jean Electric. It allowed me and other high school juniors from Arkansas to explore Washington, D.C.”
To qualify, Landon and his peers wrote an 800-word essay on the uniqueness of electric cooperatives. He cherished the privilege to visit landmarks like Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery and the Capitol.
Kassidy added, “I was honored to be one of Petit Jean Electric Cooperative’s delegates. From visiting historical places to educational stops at the Holocaust Museum and the National Archives, every moment was unforgettable.”
Melanie shared her initial apprehension: “When my parents dropped me off in Little Rock, I was nervous. This was my first time out of state and flying alone. But, as we all sat down for lunch and started talking, the unsettling feeling slowly went away.”
She continued, “This trip was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Meeting new people from our state and across the country was one of my favorite parts.”
Each student echoed that Youth Tour was more than just a trip — it was an opportunity to grow, learn, and form lasting connections. They encourage upcoming juniors to apply without hesitation.
Youth Tour also provided an understanding of electric cooperatives, their ideals, and business model. Landon, Kassidy and Melanie gained insights into how cooperatives operate democratically and are guided by principles such as community service and member involvement.
Petit Jean Electric Cooperative’s sponsorship of the Arkansas Youth Tour shows its commitment to fostering future leaders through educational initiatives that broaden perspectives and encourage civic engagement, shaping Arkansas’s future and beyond.
